I Got A Proposal From My Friend Out Of The Blue
Ryan (not his real name obviously) was every girls’ crush during my high school years. If you are imagining an athletic boy who mastered every type of sports or a pompous, student council president with a slick and neat hairstyle, you are wrong. Ryan was neither. He was rather quiet and private. He exuded an air of mysteriousness around him, which a lot of girls fell into. And I couldn’t deny that I was one of them.
After graduation, Ryan seemed to have vanished into the thin air. No one knew where he lived or whether he was alive at all. He missed every school reunion. Some guessed that he might be abroad, others agreed that he probably lived out of the wood. His absence over the years became a norm until three months ago when he slid to my DM.
I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw his name on my Instagram DM. He replied to my Instagram story (sorry I forgot what it was about), but I was so excited that I replied, “Dude, you are still alive!”. That exclamation must have had intrigued him that he asked to meet me in person. That first meeting stretched into almost every day, nonstop chatting.
Despite everything, our relationship was platonic like any other friendships I have with other male friends. So, when he asked whether I would be okay if he invited me to his house, I didn’t think much. Turns out that was a grave mistake. What he meant by “his house” was actually his parent's house.
I didn’t know what happened to Ryan because he seemed deaf when I asked him what the hell is he doing. I couldn’t keep complaining as his mom came to escort us inside. An unmistakable smile beaming on her face from ear to ear. Ryan then had the audacity to leave me alone with his mother in the living room. I was both stunned and offended, but I didn’t want to be rude.
She went inside and then brought two cups of tea and an assortment of cookies. She sat down on the sofa, still grinning cheerfully at me. She then proceeded to hold my hand. At this point, I had become terrified and I had no idea what to do or where to run. Her eyes gleamed with excitement and she became very giggly when she dropped the question, “So, have you guys decided on the wedding date?”
What. the. fuck.
I choked on my own saliva. An expression of astonishment must have had left on my face as I saw her eyebrows raised in confusion. I literally coughed for a minute before I could utter any words out of my mouth.
“Can I go to the bathroom?” That was anything my idiot brain could muster to say. At least I was finally away from her.
I couldn’t fathom what had just happened. All I knew was I need to get out of this house ASAP. Yes.. that’s right, I needed someone to rescue me. The thought of my mom instantly popped inside my head and I quickly pressed the call button.
Knock knock. Someone was knocking outside the bathroom. She must’ve realized that I went too long. “Are you okay?” She asked worriedly. My mom was not answering. I was hysterical, but then my phone flashed and someone appeared to call me. It was my mom.
I opened my eyes upon hearing my mom’s voice. I awoke in my own bedroom. I was relieved that I seemingly had successfully been rescued out of Ryan’s house. I reached for my phone and was ready to shower Ryan with rage when I realized, I didn’t have Ryan’s contact.
If you haven’t realized yet, it was a dream. I am sorry if the title click baited you. It was one of the dreams that felt real so I decided to write it here. However, the idea of proposing without dating is not foreign in my country. Usually, the man will meet his girl’s parents to ask whether they will let him marry their daughter. I personally never like that practice. If your friend proposes to you without dating before, will you accept it?
